"Why Have You Forsaken Me" is based on Psalm 22 set in the words of Christ speaking to God the father. It is the first movement of the five part song cycle, "The Shepherd Psalms" exploring the trinitarian dialogue on Calvary.

How long will you be silent?
Can you hear me
In my suffering?
Am I alone?
I’ve cried all day and night In this darkness
I find no rest
From this misery

Yet I will never doubt your holiness
To you belongs the praise of every man
You’ve rescued those who need deliverance
Take this from me, this agony
Why have you forsaken me?

Is everyone against me?
How they mock me
Like I’m nothing
Barely a man
Will anyone defend me?
Those who love me
Are they hiding
Here in the crowds?

But you have always been there by my side
You’ve known me from before the start of time
I’ve trusted in your ways for all my life
Where are you now -
My darkest hour?
Why have you forsaken me?

I’m thirsty for your presence
I’m dried up in your absence
O you my help come quickly to my aid

The heat of anger burning
My tender heart is hurting
Your searing wrath poured out upon their sin

For every shard of brokenness
I feel as though it’s in my chest
For every sin is bearing down on me

The thorns and thistles strangle me
I’m bruised now by the enemy
The pain of giving birth to my redeemed

O Father, won’t you rescue me?
I need you now so desperately
Please show me if there’s any other way!

Where are you when this pain is all I see?
I’m broken, my soul and body bleed
Is faithfulness to hang upon this tree?
My God, my God, deliver me
Why have you forsaken me?
